Moving Toward a More Sustainable Future

At this level mindfulness takes the form of self-care and personal development. This is the most common way people think about mindfulness; in the form of practices, skills and obtaining information.

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” – William James

The self-care aspect is a crucial aspect of mindfulness practice, one that can be overshadowed by the achievement-oriented world-view that dominates modern life. Without personal stability and a balanced approach to physical, mental and spiritual well-being, it is very difficult to rise above survival mode and truly thrive. The kinds of practices emphasized at this level are:

  • meditation
  • physical exercise
  • mindful eating
  • sufficient rest
  • study, and
  • creative practices.

Establishing practices, rituals and a healthy world-view that is integrated and relevant to our circumstances is the foundation for living artfully with mindful awareness. It provides with the personal strength and equanimity necessary to be of service to others and allows us to live with more ease and purpose.
