Zazen meditation is the cornerstone of Zen practice. We “sit” together in community to support each other and realize our intrinsic connection. Our weekly sessions are open and welcoming for newcomers to Zen and meditation practice as well as experienced practitioners. The sessions include seated meditation, walking meditation, chanting and discussions on basic Buddhist teachings. Sessions are drop in and offered on a donation basis.

The Freedom Library is engaged in creating sustainable and inclusive community on the eastside of St. Paul. Our weekly meditation group is an integral part of that effort. This weekly gathering is open to people new to mindfulness practices as well as experienced practitioners. Each week we spend time in silent seated meditation, walking meditation, guided meditations and discussion on various topics related to mindfulness and freedom. This is a drop in session and donations are accepted.

One Day Retreat

One day retreats begin on Friday night at 7pm and end on Saturday afternoon at 5 pm. Full participation is required. Breakfast and lunch is included for all retreats, as is lodging for all retreats at the Willows, (a rustic setting in rural Wisconsin, located 1 hour from Saint Paul, on 150th Street near Plum City, Wisconsin ). Multi-day retreats begin at 7pm on the first day. The retreats in October and May will end at 2 pm of the final day and rohatsu in December will end at 10am on the final day. Our training periods this year will be shorter (one month each) and a little more intense. Participants will be asked to register with a letter of intention. Required commitments include: attendance at the opening and closing ceremonies a minimum of 30 minutes of meditation 5 days a week at least one day of intensive meditation retreat a renunciation commitment a self-defined body practice, and active engagement with the weekly reflection materials.
